Commentary on William Thomson’s “Pitch Frames as Melodic Archetypes”
نویسنده
چکیده
While the concept of the perceptual “pitch frame” resembles leading theories of pitch structure in music in some respects, it contains some innovative elements that are discussed in this commentary. Additionally, the commentary focuses on the question of whether the “pitch frame” is a temporal or atemporal construct. Submitted 2006 April 12; accepted 2006 April 19.

Critical Review: Melodic Intonation Therapy: The Influence of Pitch and Rhythm on Therapy Outcomes
Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT) involves involves patients with nonfluent aphasia intoning (singing) melodic phrases while tapping syllables. Thus, MIT incorporates the musical components of both pitch and rhythm. This critical review explores the relative contribution of the rhythmic and pitch components of MIT to determine if both components are required for success. To explore this question...
متن کاملThe Influence of Pitch on Melodic Segmentation
Melodic segmentation is an important topic for music information retrieval, because it divides melodies into musically relevant units. Most influential theories on melodic segmentation of the last decades have stressed the role of pitch for melodic segmentation. The general assumption was, that relatively large changes or distances in any musical parameter like pitch, time, dynamics, or melodic...
متن کاملThe influence of melodic context on pitch recognition judgment.
Subjects made delayed pitch comparisons between tones that were each preceded by tones of lower pitch. The pitches of these preceding tones were so chosen that in some conditions the melodic intervals formed by the standard {S) and comparison {C} combinations were identical, and in others they differed. A strong effect of melodic relational context was demonstrated. When the $ and C combination...
متن کاملAn Experiment on the Role of Pitch Intervals in Melodic Segmentation
This paper presents the results of an experiment to test the influence of IOI, dynamics, pitch change, and pitch direction change on melodic segmentation, extending an an earlier experiment [4]. The new results show little to no significant influence of pitch, when evaluated by a linear or log-linear statistical model with regression. This supports the earlier findings, which are in contrast to...
متن کاملComment on Huron and Veltman: Does a Cognitive Approach to Medieval Mode Make Sense?
This commentary examines Huron and Veltman’s article from the perspective of historical musicology. The following issues are discussed: • The authors regard modes as conceptual categories of the medieval listener, which seems unlikely on historical and theoretical grounds. • Pitch class profiles are not a good way of capturing the melodic nature of the modes. • The diatonic rather than the chro...
